Rescuing Whiting Beach from Erosion: Yamba, NSW, Australia

0
Yamba is a small coastal community on the northern beaches of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. and is known as the "Jewel in the Crown" for Clarence Valley Council, a point which was reinforced when it won "The Best Town in Australia" in 2009. In early 2012, undermining in the southeast corner of Whiting Beach was exposing key infrastructure, including the footpath, road, stormwater pipe work and chamber, pressurized sewer and a car park. ELCOROCK® Geotextile Sand Containers were seen as an ideal solution to fit these criteria and were adopted after consultation with Geofabrics Australasia, Fisheries and Crown Land.

Bringing a Pond Back

0
Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado once had a beautiful pond. But with the city under budget constraints, management of the pond was suspended. The water slowly drained back into the groundwater, leaving behind an empty pond bed. The city's parks and trails manager is evaluating the possibility of installing an EPDM pond liner, or perhaps some clay, but nothing will be considered until the money is available. It's possible that some late summer rain will relieve the parks of irrigation costs, and if so the money might be available to fix the pond. Learn more here.;

LLDPE in the Lead

0
The Montmorency Oscoda Alpena Solid Waste Management Authority Board in Michigan needs to cap a waste cell. Initial feelings were to use only clay as a temporary bandage; but the board is now leaning towards a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) cap in order to provide a longer-term solution and leachate control. Court Sides with NYSDEC in GCL Cover Case

0
A 22 July 2010 slip opinion Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York finds that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation did not make an error in approving the extension of operations at a CWM Chemical Services hazardous waste landfill (RMU-1) in Niagara County. Part of the dispute has surrounded the permitted use of a geosynthetic clay liner in site capping plans versus a much thicker compacted clay liner. (The GCL enabled waste capacity to be increased by 106,870 cubic yards.) In the opinion, Judge John Lahtinen writes, "DEC determined, and the record supports, that a GCL cover affords better protection, thus having a positive environmental impact. The agency also noted that allowing the GCL cover would decrease the truck traffic that otherwise would have been necessary to deliver clay for a GCL cover." Learn more here.;

NYT: Natural Gas Now Viewed as Safer Bet

The plants are owned by Australia Pacific LNG, a joint venture of Origin, Conoco-Phillips, and Sinopec. This I-CORP/Leighton Contractors cooperation arose from a previous project in which I-CORP provided expert witness support to Leighton Contractors for concrete protection liner failures in SX/EW mixers/settlers at the Gunpowder mine near Mt. Isa in Queensland.

Geomembranes in Anaerobic Digesters

0
The Green Bay Press Gazette reports on the growing acceptance of anaerobic digesters on farms. The average cost of $1.5 million has limited adoption, but as more farms adopt them and more systems are developed, costs are coming down and beneficial power generation revenue is realized. Geomembrane containment liners are gaining greater acceptance, though greater awareness of the potential is needed, the Press reports. Learn more here.;
