GSE Announces More "Geosynthetics 4 Success" Seminars

GSE will continue its popular series of "Geosynthetics 4 Success" technical seminars at three sites between September and November. On September 28, the day-long seminar will be held at the Evergreen Marriott Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia and focus on the use of geosynthetics in coal ash, solid waste, hazardous waste, and liquid containment applications. On October 13, seminar arrives at the Omni Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a focus on the latest developments in geosynthetics and the use of geosynthetics in the shale gas and coal ash containment applications. November 3 will feature a session in Charlotte, North Carolina, but details are not yet available. Learn more.

The Geo-Institute of ASCE held its student GeoCompetition at the March 2008 GeoCongress in New Orleans. Eleven teams competed with design papers and MSE-style installations in plywood boxes. This year's honors go to the LSU Tigers who edged out Drexel University's students. Dr. David J. Elton, North American Geosynthetics Society President, provides a review of the event.

Major Dredging Needed

One of the most important dredging projects in the world is on the schedule: the Panama Canal. From the Pacific entrance alone project engineers aim to dredge 9.1 million cubic meters of material at a cost of about $180 million. The Atlantic dredging will run closer to $70 million. Site visits and bidding will begin shortly. Geotextile tubes are major product resources for dredging projects.
