Though the International Erosion Control Association's (IECA) Environmental Connection 2011 (EC11) conference and trade show does not open until February 20, now is the perfect time to start thinking about presentations and papers you might want to participate in during 2012's event. Start forming your idea, bring it to the conference, let it grow a bit, and submit your abstract to IECA by 27 May 2011 to make EC12 just as strong as EC11. The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) is delighted to announce a worldwide call for requests-for-proposals (RFPs) focusing on innovative geosynthetics research and development projects. There will be multiple awards made, each for $10,000 for the first year, and they are renewable for a second and third year up to a total amount of $20,000 per student. It is important to note that students must have completed their candidacy examinations leading to a doctorial degree in engineering or science to be eligible. The National Engineers Week Foundation has announced that the 2011 edition of Engineers Week will be recognized February 20-26. This year, Lynn G. Bellenger of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) will serve as chair, while William H. Swanson of Raytheon Company will serve as co-chair. In a ceremony on 1 Dec. in Washington, DC, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke presented IFAI President and CEO Stephen Warner with a recognition award for receiving the Market Development Cooperator Program Grant for its IFAI Expo Asia 2011 trade show development. The MDCP award is bestowed by the International Trade Administration (ITA) of the US Dept. of Commerce, and includes a $250,000 grant plus technical assistance from ITA to support well-defined business plans aimed at increasing exports and U.S. competitiveness within certain industries. CETCO®, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMCOL® International Corporation, has announced the addition of Dennis G. Grubb, Ph.D., P.E. to the newly created dual Directorship of Environmental Technology and Sustainable Geotechnics. In this role, Dr. Grubb will expand CETCO's capabilities to assist clients with leveraging opportunities related to the beneficial reuse of industrial byproduct and recycled materials. The UAE and the Gulf region are set to become one of the world's largest sources of petrochemicals and plastics products as the oil-producing countries invest heavily in downstream petrochemicals. According to latest statistics, the polyethylene production capacities in the GCC will increase from 10.7 million tonnes in 2009 to 21.5 million tonnes by the year 2015. The production of polypropylene will also increase from 4.8 million tonnes in 2009 to 9.5 million tonnes by 2015, an increase of 98 per cent. Learn more here.;

Deltares (based in the Netherlands) has developed this course for employees of national and regional agencies responsible for dike maintenance and dike safety. The course focuses on four items: the state-of-the-art view on failure mechanisms; emphasis is on understanding the mechanisms rather than their mathematical descriptions; new developments in the field of inspection techniques for daily maintenance and for high water conditions; the know-how and experiences in application of reliability tools for different areas in Europe; different cases including a thorough analysis of the occurred events will be studied (New Orleans, Czech Republic). Increasing costs for raw materials and energy and demand for sustainable climate protective waste treatment and recycling techniques have placed technologies like bio-methanation and material recovery facilities (MRF) in the spotlight. The biennial Waste-to-Resources Symposium (24-26 May 2011, Hanover, Germany) combines a conference, commercial exhibition and site visits to address this growing energy and waste management sector. The 2009 edition included participants from 41 countries. Abstracts for 2011's presentations will be accepted through 4 December 2010. The event will feature simultaneous translation (English-French-Spanish-German) and is being held under the patronage of Dr. Norbert Roettgen, Germany's Minister of the Environment.
