California water officials are embarking on a two-year environmental assessment of the proposed peripheral canal. The ambitious project would channel water from the Sacramento River around the Delta rather than through. But if the canal is to help the state truly conserve 20% of its water, as the governor has requested, geosynthetic liners should be considered. Governor Phil Bredesen and SI Corporation President and CEO Joe Dana announced today that SI Corporation will be bringing over 100 new jobs to Downtown Chattanooga. The announcement was made at the recently renovated 401 Building at 4th and Chestnut Streets. Geosynthetics, especially geomembrane liners, provide a capacity for rapid redevelopment of water and wastewater treatment and storage facilities. This paper provides an overview of how these materials can be utilized."

Only 15% of the over 10,000 km (16, 100 mi) of main canals and over 16,760 km (27,000 mi) of laterals in the western United States are currently lined. The remaining canals and laterals require evaluation to assess their part in the effort to conserve water resources. The geosynthetics industry is poised to benefit as water users recognize today's canal lining technologies to be economical long-term conservation solutions.
