The month of October offers plenty of playoff baseball for Geosynthetica’s editor to obsess over in his free time (while his wife rolls her eyes and his daughter uses the distraction as a way to download another 40 games onto her iPhone), but it isn’t all fun and games. It’s also a month of engaging learning online. Here’s a look at what’s on tap.

The Big Thing in October for Geosynthetics

GeoAmericas 2020 is the 4th PanAmerican Regional Conference on Geosynthetics. It’s one of the signature quadrennial events from the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). Two of the three regional geosynthetics events moved into 2021, but GeoAmericas has held its ground, opting instead to host the first major geosynthetics conference ONLINE.

From 26 – 31 October, participants will have access to high-level lectures and technical sessions, with heavy audience interaction and even networking time. October 29 serves as a middle day for short courses or a break. It’s a great program and the organizing chapter (IGS Brasil) deserves to be proud.

October Geosynthetics Webinars

Tensar gets the month’s learning rolling on October 1 with a 1:00 pm EDT presentation by Bryan Gee on Research and Performance Testing Standards for the Design of Pavement Structures. The focus will be on the requirements for valid testing to support proper road design with accepted methods.

Also on October 1, TenCate Geosynthetics will deliver Performance Testing of Roadway Geosynthetics. The 2:00 pm EDT featured speaker is Eli Cuelho of TRI Environmental. Cuelho has been central to some very impressive large-scale testing in this area. He’s also been a leading figure in accelerated testing.

Next up, Leister Technologies delivers what might be the first installation equipment webinar we’ve seen during this more intense online learning period. Veteran Allan Bullock will take attendees through the latest development in automatic welders. October 7, 11:00 am CDT.

On October 13, Presto Geosystems continues its series of live webinars with Designing Naturally Vegetated & Hard-Armored Retaining Walls. The presentation will take place at 11:00 am CDT and explore how geocellular systems are influencing design options.

Just before our eyes turn to GeoAmericas 2020 online, we get two notable webinars:

  • The Australasia Chapter of the IGS will deliver an October 21 webinar on Active Barriers (1:00 pm AEST). This is a unique opportunity to learn about some innovative approaches to geosynthetics and waterway remediation applications through the lens of active geocomposite caps.
  • On October 22, NAUE will provide insight into Sustainability in Construction vis a via the new GreenLine products. These materials are fascinating, in that they look, feel, and perform like a classic geosynthetic only these are truly green materials. It’s a cutting-edge sector. Notably, NAUE has scheduled this one for 5:00 pm CEST, making it very open to attendees in North and South America too.

Australia-based Global Synthetics has really made a name for itself in sponsoring strong online webinars on geosynthetic topics. On October 28, the series continues with Surficial Slope Stability with Engineered Earth Armoring System – Part 1. The central piece of the education here will be the use of ARMORMAX® 75, which has a verified carbon footprint up to 30 times less than rock riprap or concrete. 11:00 am AEST.

As more events appear on the October online calendar, we will add them here. See also the regularly updated online events tracker.
