New Tektoseal Barrier Geosynthetics Feature Active Layer Active Layers Enhance New Tektoseal Barrier GeosyntheticsActive Layers Enhance New Tektoseal Barrier GeosyntheticsThe wave of innovation in geosynthetics continues, with new active layer products announced by HUESKER. The company’s Tektoseal® Active line of barrier solutions are multi-layer composite materials that feature two outer woven or nonwoven geotextile layers and an internal active layer. The products are designed to be particularly effective for remediation, groundwater protection, and oil absorption.
“By varying the active substance—with polymer-based materials, activated carbon, or calcium phosphate as possible options—the product can cater to a wide range of applications, depending on the required function or mechanism,” noted the company in a release.
Three barriers are now offered under the Tektoseal® heading: Tektoseal® Active AS, AC and CP.

The latest GeoConnect newsletter from the company has also profiled the product, with a note on how the Tektoseal® AC material is a replacement for the company’s well-known Filtermat™ brand:

Tektoseal® Active AC unlocks whole new areas of application for activated carbon – a widely and successfully deployed high-performance adsorption agent – as part of active geocomposite solutions. Activated carbon has so far been used for drinking water treatment, in the chemical industry and at sewage plants. The many new options opened up by Tektoseal® Active AC include the encapsulation of pollutants already present in the environment, the prevention of new contaminant migration at the potential source and the removal of contaminants from liquids or gases. The mechanical stability of the active layer allows rapid and straightforward installation of the product wherever it is needed. The active layer is, at the same time, fully protected against any erosion caused by currents or slopes. As for all products in the Tektoseal® Active family, another major benefit lies in the possibility of customizing the manufacturing process, i.e. adapting the materials in the top, bottom and active layers to local requirements and conditions.

Applications for the AC line include filtering contaminants in soils (e.g., industrial brownfields, landfills), leachate filter for infrastructure (transport routes, airports), sludge lagoon remediation, active capping underwater, and as a contaminant filter response to traffic, transport, and industrial accidents.
The other two products target petrochemical barriers (Tektoseal® Active AS) and management of heavy metals from soil or water (Tektoseal® Active CP).
The AS product utilizes a high-performance, oil-absorbing polymer, which is sandwiched between a polypropylene or polyester nonwoven top layer and a woven or nonwoven bottom layer. The bottom layer is customizable to suit project-specific needs, such as a certain strength particularly to a floating design. Typical applications include docksides, airports, track beds, temporary gas stations, parking areas and accident sites.
The CP geocomposite is a polypropylene material with a core containing natural calcium phosphate, which is an extraordinary natural active material. The Tektoseal® Active CP outperforms similar materials, such as phosphate rocks, animal-based calcium phosphate, and bone char. The geosynthetic is engineered to provide “the stable, permanent binding of metals for over 1,000 years.” Typical uses include the treatment of acid mine drainage or the remediation of lead-contaminated soil.
Uniting the three materials is the ability to customize them to project-specific requirements and the ease of installing roll-delivered barriers.
