McWatters Wins NAGS Paper Competition

Rebecca McWatters from Queens University (Canada) won the 2009 North American Geosynthetics Society (NAGS) student paper competition. The award was announced in February at the Geosynthetics 2009 conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. McWatters' paper, "Diffusive Transport of VOCs through a Co-Extruded Geomembrane with a Nylon Barrier for use in Landfill Cover and Contaminant Barrier Systems," was judged on the content and her presentation at the conference. She is working for a PhD under the direction of Professor R. Kerry Rowe at Queens University. Read more about the award.

Contributed by the Research Council of Norway: Synthetic bags filled with sand was the solution that French and Norwegian partners came up with when they cooperated on a project to find new environment-friendly building materials that can withstand ice erosion and corrosion. The bags will be used as building blocks to protect roads and infrastructure in Arctic areas. The main Norwegian partner in the recently concluded three-year project was the independent research organisation SINTEF. The project was initiated by its French partner, the company TenCate Geosynthetics France S.A.S.

ASA Upholds NAUE's Challenge

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a challenge made by NAUE that questions whether certain claims in a brochure published by Tensar International could be substantiated. The brochure, "TriAx: A Revolution in Geogrid Technology," detailed the properties and performance advantages of Tensar TriAx geogrids. Within the information in this brochure, Tensar talks about the research that has evolved into a "revolutionary change from a rectangular to a triangular grid aperture." It goes on to say: "This was a revolution in geogrids technology with significant, new improved benefits over the biaxial geogrids." (Continued.)

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) today released the complete version of the Annual Energy Outlook 2010 (AEO2010), which includes 38 sensitivity cases that show how different assumptions regarding market and policy drivers affect the Reference case projections that EIA previously released in December, 2009. In addition to considering alternative scenarios for oil prices, economic growth, and the uptake of more energy-efficient technologies, the AEO2010 includes cases that examine the impact of changes in selected policies, such as the extension of existing policies that are currently scheduled to sunset as well as the sensitivity of natural gas shale production to variations in drilling activity and the size of the resource base.

Concrete Block Mattress (CBM) as Pipeline Protection, South Pars/North Dome Gas Field, Iran

Manasanat's Mohammad Reza Ashgbousi has shared with us some notes from a pipeline protection project in the Persian Gulf's South Pars/North Dome Gas Field. (With 51 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 7.9 billion cubic meters of condensate natural gases, South Pars/North Dome is the largest gas field in the world and is shared by Qatar and Iran.) Here, a 650m-long, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline for water outfall was protected by a geotextile-backed, flexible concrete block mattress (CBM) system.
