Protecting Cancun

0
Roughly 1200 meters of geotextile tubes will be installed along Cancun beaches as part of an erosion control protection scheme. Cancun lost much of its beach sand after Hurricane Wilma (October 2005). Restoring sand cost $20 million. The tube reinforcement design will cost roughly $1 million. Cancun is also the site of the 1st Pan American conference, GeoAmericas 2008. Learn more here.;

Hot Presentation: Geosynthetics and Fiber Optics

0
On Monday, March 14, during the Geo-Frontiers 2011 conference (13-16 March 2011, Dallas), John Lostumbo of TenCate Geosynthetics will present a much-anticipated paper on "Geosynthetic Enabled with Fiber Optic Sensors for MSE Bridge Abutment Supporting Shallow Bridge Foundations." Geotextiles with fiberoptic components provide a resource for monitoring various design functions including strain. Data collected from fiber optic monitoring can be used to determine the functional longevity of civil structures helping to insure safety as well as providing data which may be used for evaluation of design methods. Royal Ten Cate's Latest Profit Statement

0
The Netherlands-based Royal Ten Cate has released its latest profit information. Sales are down from 2008, due to the global economic situation; and the Geosynthetics and Grass Division has been hit hard. But the US-based geosynthetics operation has adjusted costs and market position since 2007 (when the market began to erode quickly in the US) and is poised for the next upward swing. The synthetic turf operations, which are dealing in a market that has yet to mature, have been more exposed to riskier credit partners so are now adjusting to work in more secure projects. All in all, for a difficult time, Ten Cate's global business is doing well and shows strong potential for when economic conditions improve. Learn more here.;

StrataWall™ Helps Restore Historic Roadway and Wins Award

Dorset Street West was an aging roadway in a beautiful historic neighborhood in Port Hope, Ontario that desperately needed rebuilding. The most severe area was a long section of roadway embankment that was supported by a deteriorating retaining wall on a steep side slope. In an OPWA-winning design, StrataWall met the challenge of a 36-ft-high wall that was nearly vertical.

Tencate Geotubes, Grand Isle

Tencate and USACE Protect Grand Isle, Louisiana

In June 2009, TenCate Geosynthetics North America reported that it was working with the US Army Corps of Engineers on rehabilitating and protecting the coastline of Grand Isle (Louisiana, USA). A row of TenCate Geotube® GT500 containers measuring 9,600 metres in length forms the core of what will ultimately be a row of dunes. The impressive new levee stretches 2.4 kilometres across the island. See photos of the construction (including a tricky threading under a bridge) here.
