The World Health Organization is pushing for increased spending on hospital and school construction around the world. The goal is to make hospitals and schools not just places of day to day need and use, but places of refuge during turmoil, such as during hurricanes or tsunamis and after earthquakes. The government of Colombia has allocated US $73 million for drainage, water management and irrigation projects, and 270 proposals, some interconnected, have come in. Grand Isle – Rebuilding on Geosynthetic Tubes

After four years and four hurricanes, Grand Isle, Louisiana is rebuilding with a focus on tourism. It's all being enabled with the help of geosynthetic tubes. To protect the island from future storms, the state and federal governments are spending millions on new drainage pumps and 30-feet-in-circumference geosynthetic tubes within and along the 6.5-mile levee system. The tubes are filled with compacted tubes and designed to keep the levees weighted down enough to survive future storms. Learn more here.;

EPA Extends Comment Period for NPDES General Permit

On April 25, 2011, EPA published a draft NPDES general permit entitled “Draft National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General Permit for Stormwater Discharges from Construction Activities.” As initially published in the Federal Register, written comments on the draft general permit were to be submitted to EPA on or before June 24, 2011 (a 60-day public comment period). Since publication, EPA has received several requests for additional time to submit comments. Therefore, the public comment period is being extended for 17 days and will now end on July 11, 2011. Sika AG announces that its subsidiary Sika (Japan) Ltd. has acquired the construction sealant business of Henkel Japan Ltd. The acquired business includes the well-known trademarks, Bellace and Duribbon, which are well established in the Japanese construction market with annual sales of JPY 1115 mn (approx. CHF 12.3 mn). With this acquisition, Sika will complement its Sikaflex range and strengthen its market position in the Japanese construction sealant market. Relevant sales and technical employees have agreed to transfer to Sika (Japan) Ltd.

Berkshire Exits ADS after Twenty-Two Years

Berkshire Partners LLC, the Boston-based private equity firm, today announced it has sold its ownership position in Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. (ADS), the leading manufacturer and distributor of corrugated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe products in the world. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. ADS serves a variety of markets including storm and sanitary sewer systems, stormwater retention/detention systems, septic systems, roadway constructions, residential and commercial construction, golf courses, athletic fields and agriculture. Today, more than 8.5 billion feet of ADS pipe are in service around the world.
